“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
George Bernard Shaw
More than 35 years ago, I thought of nothing else but being a teacher in my own high school classroom. It was what I wanted to do and I fearlessly pursued it by moving to the tiny island of Lana’i. (I did this despite my parents’ objections.) It didn't take me very long to learn that teaching was a demanding job. I was lonely for my friends and family and I desperately wanted to move back home to Honolulu. My parents wouldn’t hear of me quitting and made me honor the teaching contract that I had signed. Of course, they were right and it was through the mentorship of fellow Lana’i teachers, I soon learned to enjoy living on the island and to love teaching.
Before coming to FHS, I had spent many years as an elementary school librarian and as a State resource teacher- but- in my heart I always wanted to return to teaching in a high school. I am forever grateful to Ms. Catherine Payne for giving me the chance to be your librarian. Farrington challenged me to be a better teacher, to always look for answers and to go forth to serve. I got to work with many gifted teachers and a staff that graciously helped and supported the library program because they knew students would always be the recipients. Most importantly, I quickly found out Kalihi’s highly treasured secret- Farrington students- who are outstanding in every way! This is why, even if I am retiring, everything about Farrington will always get my immediate attention!
It is exciting what Mr. Carganilla and his team has planned for you in the future. They are creating opportunities for students to achieve and to realize their academic and career dreams. All you got to do as students is to BELIEVE in yourself.
Mahalo and Best Wishes,
Ms. Julie K. Tomomitsu
